An orthopaedic procedure involves surgery on a bone or joint to repair injuries, correct abnormalities, or relieve pain.
Do not feed your pet the day of the procedure. Remove all food from the night before. Water may remain available at all times.
What to Expect:
Preparation:
Hair will be clipped from your pet’s front leg to allow for intravenous anaesthesia to be administered.
Procedure:
Once your cat is under general anaesthesia, the veterinarian will perform surgery on the bone or joint.
Your pet will be closely monitored throughout the procedure and during recovery to ensure their safety.
Aftercare:
Your pet will be sent home with a buster collar to prevent them from licking or scratching the surgical site, which could lead to complications.
Potential Risks and Complications:
While we take every precaution to minimise risks, complications can occur. Please review the following and speak with our team if you have any questions:
Haemorrhage (bleeding): Can occur during or after surgery.
Wound breakdown: Partial or complete opening of the surgical site.
Wound infection: Proper care is essential to prevent infection.
Bruising and swelling: Common post-operative effects.
Seroma: A fluid-filled pocket may develop near the surgical site.
Pain: Your pet will receive pain relief, but some discomfort is expected.
Suture site reaction: Some pets may have mild irritation from sutures.
Clipper rash or skin reaction: Sensitivity to surgical scrubs or clippers.
Recovery injuries: Pets may injure themselves while waking from anaesthesia.
Implant instability (if applicable): Issues with plates, pins, or screws used in the procedure.
Failure of implant/pin (if applicable): Rare, but possible complications with surgical hardware.
Anaesthetic risks: While uncommon, complications—including, in very rare cases, death—are possible.
Our Commitment to Your Pet’s Safety:
